The construction of a new section of the border wall between the United States and Mexico has reignited debate over security and migration in one of the most heavily trafficked regions.

The administration of President Donald Trump is promoting the construction of a new wall segment in the Santa Teresa area, across from Ciudad Juárez.

The project involves an estimated investment of $4.5 billion.

It is part of a broader strategy to strengthen security at various points along the border.

The project is being carried out in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The plan includes building approximately 230 miles of border barrier.

Of that total, about 110 kilometers will be located between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

This region is one of the busiest migration corridors between the two countries.

What Is the New Border Wall Like?

The new section stands out for its metal design and matte black color.

This feature is not aesthetic but functional.

The black color allows the wall to absorb more heat from sunlight.

This is intended to make it more difficult for migrants to climb.

The design reflects a strategy focused on physically hardening the border.

It represents one of the innovations within the broader project led by US authorities.

The infrastructure is part of a wider immigration control strategy centered on the US-Mexico border black wall.

What Do Those Working With Migrants Say?

Religious worker Javier Calvillo questioned the effectiveness of these measures.

In an interview with EFE, he stated that such strategies have not stopped migration flows.

“The more difficult you make your wall or barriers, the more you affect migration—you make it more complicated, but even then, migrants will continue to cross,” he said.

Calvillo recalled that Ciudad Juárez has faced periods of intense migratory pressure.

Thousands of people have gathered near international bridges.

Many migrants wait for weeks or even months for an opportunity to cross.

According to him, a stricter US immigration policy has limited results.

“They will never be able to stop migration. Why? Because human beings will always think bigger, despite walls, programs, or strategies,” he added.

What Risks Could These Barriers Create?

Calvillo warned about indirect consequences of increasing physical barriers.

He explained that past US immigration policies have forced migrants to remain in border cities.

They have also pushed migrants to seek more dangerous routes.

He mentioned measures such as Title 42 and the “Remain in Mexico” (MPP) program.

These policies resulted in prolonged stays in border regions.

The religious leader acknowledged that countries have the right to protect their sovereignty.

However, he emphasized that the right to migrate should also be considered.

“Every country has the right and the freedom to protect its sovereignty and security, but we must also recognize that people have the right to move,” he said.

Finally, he warned that more barriers like the black border wall could increase risks.

“No matter how many walls or strategies are put in place, they will never overcome the intelligence, willpower, and strength of migrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families,” he concluded.
